Background of the Study
Tax compliance is influenced by a variety of factors, including cultural norms, values, and beliefs. In Nigeria, a country with diverse cultural groups, understanding these influences is critical for designing effective tax policies. Among the Yoruba-speaking population, cultural factors such as communal ties, respect for authority, and perceptions of government accountability play significant roles in shaping taxpayer behavior (Ogundele & Adebayo, 2024).

The Nigerian government has faced challenges in achieving high compliance rates, partly due to a lack of consideration for cultural contexts in tax policy design and implementation. This study examines the influence of cultural factors on taxpayer behavior in the Yoruba-speaking region, exploring how these dynamics affect attitudes toward tax compliance (Oyetade & Omolara, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Taxpayer behavior in Nigeria is often shaped by cultural influences, yet these factors are rarely considered in tax administration strategies. Among the Yoruba-speaking population, attitudes toward taxes are influenced by cultural norms and perceptions of fairness and government accountability. These factors can either enhance or hinder compliance, depending on how they are addressed (Eze & Balogun, 2024).

This study evaluates the impact of cultural factors on taxpayer behavior in the Yoruba-speaking region, highlighting the implications for improving compliance through culturally sensitive tax policies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the cultural factors influencing taxpayer behavior in the Yoruba-speaking region.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these cultural factors on tax compliance.
  3. To propose culturally sensitive strategies for improving tax compliance in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What cultural factors influence taxpayer behavior in the Yoruba-speaking region?
  2. How do these factors impact tax compliance?
  3. What strategies can improve compliance through consideration of cultural influences?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cultural factors significantly influence taxpayer behavior in the Yoruba-speaking region.
  2. The impact of cultural factors on compliance is mediated by perceptions of government accountability.
  3. Culturally sensitive tax policies improve compliance rates in the Yoruba-speaking region.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the Yoruba-speaking region of Nigeria between 2023 and 2025, examining cultural influences on taxpayer behavior. Limitations include difficulties in quantifying cultural factors and potential bias in respondent self-reporting.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cultural Factors: Social norms, values, and beliefs that influence behavior.
  • Taxpayer Behavior: Attitudes and actions of individuals or businesses regarding tax compliance.
